Wedding dress shopping is one of the most exciting parts of planning your big day, but it can also feel a little overwhelming if you don’t know what to expect. At Veil & Bloom, we believe an informed bride is a confident bride, so we’re sharing six honest truths about wedding dress shopping to help you feel prepared, relaxed, and ready to enjoy every second of the experience.

Your wedding dress size will not be your usual size

Bridal sizing is very different from high street sizing. In fact, wedding dresses can run up to 4 sizes smaller than what you’d normally wear, and sizing varies between designers too. 

The most important thing to remember is that your wedding dress is made to fit you - not the other way around. The number on the label is just that: a number. It’s never seen, shared, or remembered. What truly matters is how you feel in the dress.  

The sample won't fit perfectly

At Veil & Bloom, we carry one sample size of each gown. That means the dress you try on is unlikely to fit you perfectly, but don’t worry - that’s completely normal. 

Our stylists work their magic with clips and clever pinning to show you how the gown will look once it’s ordered in your size and tailored to you. We’ll always make sure you feel secure and comfortable while giving you a realistic idea of the final silhouette. Alterations are where the transformation truly happens, so trust the process! 

You might fall in love with the complete opposite of what you imagined 

It happens all the time. You walk in convinced you want fitted and sleek… and leave dreaming about that voluminous princess gown. Trends evolve and tastes change. Sometimes a dress simply feels right, and remember it always looks different on the body than it does on the hanger.

We always encourage our brides to stay open-minded. The dress you least expect might be the one you end up walking down the aisle in. 

The “this is THE dress” moment isn’t always instant 

Not everyone cries, and not everyone feels that immediate spark. There is no ‘right’ way to find your wedding dress (no matter what the movies might have you believe). Sometimes you have to leave the boutique to realise you can’t stop thinking about one particular gown. We always encourage our brides to take as much time as they need to think it through - and that could be hours, days, or even weeks.

If a dress lingers in your mind long after your appointment and you're using it as a comparison for other designs, that’s usually a very good sign that you've found the one.

Comfort is key 

You’ll be moving a lot on your wedding day. You’ll walk down the aisle. Hug your guests. Sit through dinner. Dance the night away. And of course, say “I do.” When you try on dresses, make sure you move around, practice sitting, lift your arms, and imagine wearing it for an entire day. 

If something doesn’t feel right during your appointment, it will only feel more noticeable on your wedding day. The perfect dress should look beautiful, but being comfortable is key to feeling your very best on the day.

It’s okay if you don’t say yes at your first appointment
