How Much Does a Wedding Dress Cost in the UK?

Wedding dress shopping is one of the most exciting parts of planning a wedding, but there’s one question almost every bride has before stepping into a boutique: how much does a wedding dress actually cost? The answer can vary quite a lot.

In the UK, you can find wedding dresses for a few hundred pounds, while luxury designer or bespoke gowns can cost several thousand. The price of your dress will depend on where you shop, the designer, fabrics, detailing and how the gown is made. So, whether you’re just starting to set your wedding budget or you’re getting ready to book your first bridal appointment, here’s a little more about what you can expect.

What is the average cost of a wedding dress in the UK?

Wedding dress prices in the UK cover a huge range. At the lower end, high-street, pre-loved and sample dresses can sometimes be found for under £500. Bridal boutique gowns tend to sit higher, while premium designer, couture and bespoke wedding dresses can reach £5,000 or significantly more.

Bridebook currently estimates typical bridal boutique dresses at around £1,200–£2,500, with premium designer gowns typically starting from around £2,000.

At Veil & Bloom, our wedding dresses currently range from £1,100 to £3,000, giving our brides a variety of styles and designers across different budgets. We always recommend deciding on a comfortable budget before you begin shopping. That way, your stylist can guide you towards dresses you can genuinely consider saying yes to.

Why do wedding dress prices vary so much?

Two dresses can look quite similar at first glance but have very different price tags. There are several things that can influence the cost of a wedding dress.

The designer

As with fashion generally, different bridal designers sit at different price points. Established designer labels may cost more because of their design process, craftsmanship, fabrics and construction. At Veil & Bloom, our collection includes designers such as Rosa Clara, Luna Novias and Adriana Alier, giving brides plenty of different styles to explore within our price range.

Fabrics

The type and quality of fabric used can have a big impact on the price of a wedding dress. Luxurious crepes, mikado, intricate lace, layers of tulle and specialist fabrics can all affect the final cost. You may also find that gowns using larger amounts of fabric, such as dramatic ballgowns or dresses with long trains, are priced differently from simpler silhouettes.

Embellishment and detailing

If you love sparkle, beading, embroidery, appliqué or intricate lace, these details can also influence the cost. Some gowns feature hours of detailed craftsmanship, particularly where embellishment is applied individually or lace motifs are carefully positioned across the dress. A beautifully simple wedding dress isn’t necessarily inexpensive either. Minimal gowns rely heavily on beautiful fabric, expert cutting and construction to create that perfectly effortless look.

The construction of the dress

Wedding dresses are very different from everyday dresses. Corsetry, boning, built-in cups, structured bodices and multiple layers can all be used to create the shape and support of a gown. Often, there’s much more happening underneath a wedding dress than you can see from the outside, and that construction is one of the reasons a beautifully fitted bridal gown can feel so different when you put it on.

What can you get for different wedding dress budgets?

There isn’t a single budget that every bride needs to have. What matters is finding something you love within a price range that feels comfortable for you.

Under £1,000

It is absolutely possible to find a beautiful wedding dress for under £1,000, although you may have a slightly smaller selection depending on the boutique and designer. It’s also worth keeping an eye out for bridal sample sales, where boutiques sell selected gowns at reduced prices. These can be a great opportunity to find a designer wedding dress for less, particularly if you’re flexible on style or working with a shorter wedding timeline.

£1,000–£2,000

This is where you’ll begin to find a wide selection of gowns from bridal designers and independent boutiques. You can expect plenty of choice across different silhouettes, from fitted crepe dresses and romantic lace gowns to flowing A-lines and more traditional bridal styles.

£2,000–£3,000

At this price point, you’ll generally find an even wider choice of designer gowns, premium fabrics, statement silhouettes and more intricate detailing. This doesn't necessarily mean a £2,800 dress will feel more special to you than a £1,300 one, though. The right wedding dress is the one you feel incredible wearing, regardless of where it sits within your budget.

Remember to budget for alterations

One thing brides can sometimes forget when setting their dress budget is alterations. Most wedding dresses will require some alterations to give you the best possible fit. This might be something relatively simple, such as adjusting the hem, or it could involve alterations to the bodice, straps, sleeves or other areas of the gown.

The amount you’ll need to budget will depend on your dress and the work required, so it’s worth keeping a separate amount aside rather than spending your entire bridal budget on the gown itself.

Don't forget your bridal accessories

Your dress may be the main part of your bridal look, but you might also want to budget for a veil, shoes, jewellery and hair accessories.

You certainly don't need all of them. Some brides choose a dramatic cathedral veil and statement accessories, while others love a beautifully simple dress with barely any accessories at all.

We usually recommend choosing your wedding dress first and then building the rest of your bridal look around it.

Should you tell your bridal stylist your budget?

Yes, and there's absolutely no need to feel awkward about it. Knowing your budget allows your stylist to show you dresses that you can comfortably consider.

It can be really disappointing to fall completely in love with a gown and only discover afterwards that it is far beyond what you planned to spend. At Veil & Bloom, we'll happily talk through pricing and help you explore options within your preferred budget. Having a budget doesn't limit your bridal experience. It simply helps us make your appointment work for you.

Is it worth spending more on a wedding dress?

This is entirely personal. For some brides, the dress is one of the most important parts of their wedding and something they’re happy to dedicate a larger part of their budget towards. For others, spending less on the dress means having more available for the venue, honeymoon, or other parts of the wedding day. Neither approach is right or wrong.

Try not to feel pressured by what somebody else spent on their wedding dress, or by the idea that you need to spend a certain amount for your dress to feel special. You might find your dream dress at £1,200 when you were prepared to spend £2,500. Equally, you may decide that you’re comfortable increasing your original budget slightly for a gown you absolutely adore. The important thing is deciding what feels right for you.
